Securing Your New Home Before Your Move In

A few weeks ago, my sweet spouse brought home several tomato plants a friend had given him. My husband immediately put the small plants in pots. Every day, my spouse and I checked the plants to see whether they needed water. When the plants started growing tall, my spouse purchased stakes to brace them up with. He also invested in fertilizer to provide the plants with the nutrients they needed to grow. One day, when he went to look at the plants, he was excited to see several small tomatoes sprouting. That night, we celebrated our first gardening success as man and wife. On this blog, I hope you will discover simple gardening tips to help you grow your first crop of fruits or vegetables. Enjoy!

Buying a new home is great, and when you get the keys to the home at closing, it is time to change the locks and make your new home secure. If you bought the home new and it has never been lived in, you might not have this concern, but if you bought a home from another person, there is no telling how many keys are out there or who might be able to just walk in, even if the doors are locked.

Changing The Locks

The day has come to move into your new home. You want to be sure the home is secure, and you and your family will be safe. One way to do that is to have the entrance locks changed right away. If you are not sure how to do it, you can have a locksmith come to the house and do it for you. While they are there, you might want to have them evaluate and other locks in the house that might need to be rekeyed or replaced.

A good locksmith can change or rekey your locks onsight with a few tools, and it will only take a few minutes for them to do. If the locks are not able to be rekeyed, he may suggest you change the locksets completely to be sure no one has a key except you. The locksmith may recommend a lockset by brand or he may have one with you that you can have installed while he is there.

What About The Windows?

In most homes, the windows do not have a keyed lock on them. They are manually operated locks on the inside of the window frame that you lock or unlock when you want to open or close the window. Some of these locks are easier to defeat from outside the house then other are but adding just a small guard added to the window frame near the lock can make it nearly impossible to defeat without breaking the glass. While this is not really something the locksmith specializes in, he or she may know of a product that can help you make the windows in your home just a little bit safer.

 Sliding Glass Doors

What do you do about the sliding glass doors to the patio or that lead into the yard? Depending on the door and lock, it can sometimes be changed as well. If it cannot be changed, you can install a bar in the frame that will block the sliding door track and keep the door from opening. There are a few different styles that are available to choose the one that works best for you and install it in the frame to keep anyone from coming in through the sliding door of your new home.
